USOC to blame..

I agree/believe with Ryan Lochte’s explanation 100%.
I’ve traveled to North Vietnam, Bangladesh, Colombia, IRON CURTAIN countries Czechoslovakia (former), Hungary (under Soviet Control), Northern Ireland (during ‘The Troubles’), Croatia, Nepal (during a Maoist insurgency), Bosnia and Cuba 4X (to name a few). These countries are/were police states and were under communist/terrorist control at the time.
Brazil is a mess. It is not only a police state, but a state where police are often afraid to go.
That said, most Americans are not aware of how to travel and behave in those countries and still stay ‘safe’. I mean safe from criminals and CORRUPT police! I was arrested and detained 2X in Cuba!

I was in Jamaica 20 years ago when the police often wore cut-off shorts, t-shirts and carried automatic weapons (no uniforms). I sat down one day and chatted with these Jamaican ‘police’ (called State Security) while they smoked weed and did lines of cocaine. They told me if I was smart I would hire a body guard before going into Montego Bay by myself. Wow!
Lochte said in the statement released today that he was traumatized by the incident. I BELIEVE HIM. Americans are not used to para-military forces and paying bribes just to be able to move on with your day. An average tourist would consider bribery and robbery almost one and the same. I had Hungarian border guards rummage through the trunk of my car and take what they wanted!
“It’s traumatic to be out late with your friends in a foreign country — with a language barrier — and have a stranger point a gun at you and demand money to let you leave, but regardless of the behavior of anyone else that night, I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that am sorry to my teammates, my fans, my fellow competitors, my sponsors, and the hosts of this great event,” he said.
“Understandably, we were frightened and confused during this time. Through the interpreter, one of the guards said that we needed to pay them in order to leave. I gave them what I had in my wallet, which was a $20 bill, and Jimmy gave them 100 Reals, which is about $50 in total. They lowered the guns and I used hand gestures to ask if it was okay to leave and they said yes. We walked about a block down the street and hailed another taxi to return to the Village.”
I believe they made these apologies (Bentz’s apology was similar to Lochte’s) to save face for the US and the USOC. Lochte’s career should not be over AND the Olympics should never have been held in Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately these decisions are made 8 years prior. Much can happen in 8 years (as it did in Brazil)
I really should have used WordPress and made this an article not a FACEBOOK post because I could continue on here.
Our business in Florida caters to many wealthy South Americans (and Arabians) who live here now because their safety cannot be guaranteed in Central America, South America and parts of the Arab Peninsula/North Africa They are afraid of being kidnapped, having their houses robbed, or worse. They have people ‘at home’ manage their businesses BUT they live comfortably, in safety, here in Miami.
